"Efficient," as in, not particularly beautiful, but got the ball where it needed to go. I don't mean mechanically perfect. I'm sure you're aware that Nicklaus went through various phases with his swing. I've seen photos of him at 19 that look like Tiger at impact, and then I've seen photos of him at 23-25 that seemed way out of control. Probably from about '80 to '84 was his best period mechanically. I'm not sure how "full" of "unorthodox motions" he was then, but I'd love to hear it.

In no way was Nicklaus' swing efficient....effective yes, but hardly efficient, his swing was full of compensations for unorthodox motions, he is just very gifted

no such thing as a perfect swing, is there
emncaity (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
You realize it's not _actually_ perfect, right? Doesn't have to be. Everybody who's ever played has been flawed. But his swing is close to perfect, for sure. What it really is, is efficient and purposeful--a description that happens to fit guys like Hogan and Nicklaus. It's weird, but the "pretty swingers" in any era since Jones never end up being the #1 players; it's always the guys with this kind of motion.
