This song came out when I was about 10 or 11. I always thought she was beautiful and I believed that she was singing this song to me (yes, my name is Sam). Funny the things you remember looking back at that age. Still one of my favorites!!!

@MsCheresse You're right, the song about her new born dog was "Slow Down Jackson" from the Clearly Love album.

Along with "Come on over"this is her most beautiful song. The hope, the pain and the longing..no one can get it across like her.I have played her songs for 30 years now,and they are so prescious to me.John Farrar wrote"Sam",she only wrote a couple of songs herself.I doubt this is about her dog.For me it is a love song about a man she has lost.

When I was a young girl of oh about 14 or there was a young man in Orchestra class whose name was Sam & he was my friend. I always thought of him whenever this song played on FM & I think I wore out the 8 track tape paying this one song over & over again ... I had SUCH a terrible schoolgirl CRUSH on him- he never knew! Well funniest thing happened todaywe ran into each other online in a forum, we IM'd, he asked to call- he had a true confession too- he ALSO had a crush on me!

I can remember this song from the 70`s . Olivia had such a wonderful voice, & she was so `naturally` beautiful, great song.

She mentioned on TV that his song was actually about her beloved dog, Sam, which had gotten out of her yard. She was never able to find him and was broken-hearted about it when she wrote this song. Anyone who loves dogs understands her... |
